A former English teacher, I now work as an independent English tutor. I offer in-person tutoring for all levels of English Language and English Literature, including home-schooling; 11+ entrance, IB, GCSE, iGCSE, A Level and university-level English; general enrichment for all ages; and creative writing lessons.
During the Easter and summer holidays, I run intensive revision sessions to ensure that students are fully prepared for upcoming examinations, and are up to date with course content before starting a new academic year.
I work independently from a designated learning area in my home where I have a wealth of learning resources, and I have enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. I am an approved vendor for Surrey County Council. I have previously worked as an examiner for one of the leading exam boards giving me unique insight into how the best grades are achieved.
Over the last five years, I have had the pleasure of tutoring students at every stage of their learning journey - from successfully gaining entrance to grammar schools, to increasing predicted GCSE grades, from achieving the perfect scores for their chosen university, to being awarded first class grades once at university.
Students with dyslexia have rediscovered their love of reading and progressed to study English at A Level. A twice-excluded student successfully passed 5 GCSEs with me, and a year 8 student recently won his Blue Peter Green Badge with a poem he wrote on climate change during my lesson. Most recently, a former student, who was not predicted to pass GCSE English, stopped me in the street to share that he had used what he learned in my GCSE lessons every day of his A Level studies and in his successful application to study Pharmacy at university.
I recently received a proud message from a mother informing me that her daughter's English teacher admitted to having to look up a word in the dictionary that her daughter had learned during her time with me. Work completed by my students is often used as exemplar work for the whole class during lessons at school. I have even heard, on a number of occasions, about teachers in school photocopying my resources to use in their own lessons!
In short: I love English and I love teaching English! I feel very lucky to work with students on a daily basis and to make a difference to their future life opportunities. Please see my testimonials to read the glowing feedback I receive from parents and students, and please feel free to contact me to discuss your child's learning journey.
Since establishing my private tuition consultancy is 2017, I have had the pleasure of working with many neurodiverse students. I have supported students both in mainstream education and those who are currently being educated though alternative systems. I specialise in supporting girls with ASD, ADHD, PDA and dyslexia. Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for a tutor who has extensive experience with neurodiversity, or if you need guidance on any of the issues relating to neurodiversity and the education system.
"My daughter has been having GCSE tuition with Deborah over the last 3 months and has absolutely loved her lessons. What a transformation! Not only has her technique and confidence improved - the lessons have renewed her enthusiasm in the subject. It is lovely that she has started reading again for pleasure and she is now considering changing one of her A level choices to English. I highly recommend Deborah."
“Deborah is the best possible English tutor. Everything she says is based on years of experience, and she is the loveliest, most down to earth person. She has taught me so much and I attribute all success to her. Also she has a really cute dog and her cosy home is a truly amazing work environment. Everything is personal to what I need and she always pushes me to get the best grades out there rather than what I feel I can achieve.”
I specialise in transforming students' experience of learning English: resulting in students who are engaged, inspired and achieve their learning goals.
